Mas-ter…Definition
Noun
A skilled practitioner of a
particular art or activity
Adjective
Having or showing very great
skill or proficiency
Whenever I participate in any
training, especially instructor development training, I always take some time a
day or two later to sit back and reflect on exactly what I learned and where my
performance could have been a little better and what I need to do to improve my
performance in the future. More
importantly I also take into consideration how I can effectively incorporate
the knowledge I have learned in order to enhance the skills of the people that
I train. As a firearms instructor my
first and most important priority is to provide a SAFE training
environment. My second goal is to
provide them with EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT skills that actually will stand
up in real world conflicts. EFFECTIVE,
defined as skills that work and EFFICIENT defined as getting
the best results in the shortest amount of time. Remember the longer the conflict last the
more the chances are that you might loss.
To be a successful firearms trainer you must take what you do seriously
and you have to be dedicated to it and always stay highly motivated. If you don’t your students will pick up on it
right away and not benefit from the information no matter how good it is. It’s not just something you do, but is who
you are! There are several other
qualities that contribute to being an outstanding trainer, but we will save
that for another post.
The training our law
enforcement WARRIORS receive today has come a long way from what it
was in the past and that a great thing!
We can’t let cuts in the training budgets today interfere with making
our brother and sisters the best and most effective WARRIORS possible. We must strive to make sure that we are
getting the biggest bang for our buck.
This better training our law enforcement community receives today is
reflected in the number of law enforcement officer’s death due to violent
attacks. It has come down but still not to the point of where it should be. The
perfect number would be ZERO!
That would probably happen in a perfect world, but we all know that the world
we live in is far from that. However,
the closer we come to that number the better.
I was once at a training
conference and the presenter, and forgive me for not giving him credit but I
just can’t remember his name, referenced the following; for training to be EFFECTIVE
it has to incorporate the 3 R’s. It has to be;
REALISTIC, RELEVANT, AND RECENT. Do a little
homework and look up the definition of each of these.
The point I am trying to make
here without making this post 100 pages long is that the IALEFI
ORGANIZATION strives to maintain the highest level of
professional training standards and information that is available. They do this by providing the most highly skilled
and experienced professional in the field of law enforcement training. The information that these professionals
bring to the training world is constantly being updated as new facts are made
available and new more EFFECTIVE AND EFFFICIENT TECHNIQUES
are developed. This is important because
the bad guys are constantly changing their tactics and strategies.
Last week I attended another IALEFI, MASTER INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. Once again I was not disappointed. The instructors and the topics that were
presented were fantastic. We did a lot
of live fire training, but more importantly was the amount of information and
feedback that was available.
These programs are so good
because of not only the instructors that are provided but because of the
individuals that attend. Everyone there
is an A type personality, highly skilled and highly motivated. Does make things interesting! If you were not that type of person you would
not be there. A lot of the attendees
like myself paid for this training out of our own pocket and that also includes
the ammo and traveling expenses. REMEMBER,
YOU are responsible for your training!
The drills we did were not only
of the high speed, high tech version but we also took the training down to the
basic fundamentals. If you’re basic
skill set is not close to perfect than the rest of what is in your tool box won’t
be even close to being EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT.
I would like to thank the IALEFI ORIGANIZATION, THE INSTRUCTORS; (Bottom row on the right. From left to right.)
Bill Garland Sr. (Oregon Dep’t
of Public Safety Standards & Training), Cap’t. Mike Boyle (Retired Training
Administrator, NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife), and Sgt. Allen Griffin (Lead
F. I. Instructor, Twp. Of Parsippany Troy Hills PD). Also to all my brothers who attended the
class. You are all a first class act!
