IALEFI MASTER INSTRUCTOR PROGRAM...MY THOUGHTS

Mas-ter…Definition

Noun
A skilled practitioner of a particular art or activity

Adjective
Having or showing very great skill or proficiency

Whenever I participate in any training, especially instructor development training, I always take some time a day or two later to sit back and reflect on exactly what I learned and where my performance could have been a little better and what I need to do to improve my performance in the future.  More importantly I also take into consideration how I can effectively incorporate the knowledge I have learned in order to enhance the skills of the people that I train.  As a firearms instructor my first and most important priority is to provide a SAFE training environment.  My second goal is to provide them with EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT skills that actually will stand up in real world conflicts.  EFFECTIVE, defined as skills that work and EFFICIENT defined as getting the best results in the shortest amount of time.  Remember the longer the conflict last the more the chances are that you might loss.  To be a successful firearms trainer you must take what you do seriously and you have to be dedicated to it and always stay highly motivated.  If you don’t your students will pick up on it right away and not benefit from the information no matter how good it is.  It’s not just something you do, but is who you are!  There are several other qualities that contribute to being an outstanding trainer, but we will save that for another post.

The training our law enforcement WARRIORS receive today has come a long way from what it was in the past and that a great thing!  We can’t let cuts in the training budgets today interfere with making our brother and sisters the best and most effective WARRIORS possible.  We must strive to make sure that we are getting the biggest bang for our buck.  This better training our law enforcement community receives today is reflected in the number of law enforcement officer’s death due to violent attacks. It has come down but still not to the point of where it should be. The perfect number would be ZERO! That would probably happen in a perfect world, but we all know that the world we live in is far from that.  However, the closer we come to that number the better.

I was once at a training conference and the presenter, and forgive me for not giving him credit but I just can’t remember his name, referenced the following; for training to be EFFECTIVE it has to incorporate the 3 R’s.  It has to be;
REALISTIC, RELEVANT, AND RECENT.  Do a little homework and look up the definition of each of these.

The point I am trying to make here without making this post 100 pages long is that the IALEFI ORGANIZATION strives to maintain the highest level of professional training standards and information that is available.  They do this by providing the most highly skilled and experienced professional in the field of law enforcement training.  The information that these professionals bring to the training world is constantly being updated as new facts are made available and new more EFFECTIVE AND EFFFICIENT TECHNIQUES are developed.  This is important because the bad guys are constantly changing their tactics and strategies.

Last week I attended another IALEFI, MASTER INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.  Once again I was not disappointed.  The instructors and the topics that were presented were fantastic.  We did a lot of live fire training, but more importantly was the amount of information and feedback that was available.

These programs are so good because of not only the instructors that are provided but because of the individuals that attend.  Everyone there is an A type personality, highly skilled and highly motivated.  Does make things interesting!  If you were not that type of person you would not be there.  A lot of the attendees like myself paid for this training out of our own pocket and that also includes the ammo and traveling expenses.  REMEMBER, YOU are responsible for your training!

The drills we did were not only of the high speed, high tech version but we also took the training down to the basic fundamentals.  If you’re basic skill set is not close to perfect than the rest of what is in your tool box won’t be even close to being EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT.

I would like to thank the IALEFI ORIGANIZATION, THE INSTRUCTORS; (Bottom row on the right.  From left to right.)
Bill Garland Sr. (Oregon Dep’t of Public Safety Standards & Training), Cap’t. Mike Boyle (Retired Training Administrator, NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife), and Sgt. Allen Griffin (Lead F. I. Instructor, Twp. Of Parsippany Troy Hills PD).  Also to all my brothers who attended the class.  You are all a first class act!

I am the one taking the picture!!!!!!

ALWAYS COVER YOU SIX! AND STAY SAFE!

Please excuse any spelling or grammar errors, not my best skill.  IF IT DOESN’T HAVE A TRIGGER AND GO BANG. OH WELL NEED I SAY MORE!  LOL

MASTER INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT TRAINING CLASS

Getting ready for the training class which begins tomorrow and finishes up on Friday afternoon. The three day program will emphasis the topic of INTENSIVE HANDGUN SKILLS.  I am really looking forward to this class not only for the quality of the knowledge and information that will be available but also because my former agency, The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, is the host agency and it will be held at our firearms training center in Jackson NJ.  It will be great getting back there and hopefully seeing a lot of people that I haven't seen in a couple of years.  Oh yes, shooting a lot of bullets during the class will also be FANTASTIC!  These IALEFI Master Instructor Development Programs are top shelf.  Because I have to give credit to where credit is due, these programs are so Good and Effective because of the extreme hard work and dedication that are put into them by my former Training Administrator, Captain Mike Boyle.  They are his creation and believe me no one could have done a better job.  If you are a Law Enforcement Firearm Instructor you are doing yourself and the people you are responsible to train a great injustice if you don't participate in one of these programs.  This is the second one I have taken and won't be the last.  I will post some pics when I get back.

TRAINING

I HAD A VERY PRODUCTIVE WEEK.  I SPENT A LOT OF TIME TRAINING, WORKING ON MY OWN SKILL DEVELOPMENT, AND ALSO WITH A PA ACT 235 RE-CERT CLASS ON THURSDAY AND A COUPLE OF PRIVATE LESSON ON SATURDAY.  I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT WORKING WITH PEOPLE ALSO HELPS ME WITH DEVELOPING AND ENHANCING MY OWN LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE.  I SAY THIS BECAUSE FOCUSING ON THE BASICS WITH THEM HELPS ME RE-EMPHASIS TO MYSELF THE IMPORTANCE  AND THE NEED OF BEING CONSISTENT WITH THOSE IMPORTANT FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS OF SIGHT ALIGNMENT/ SIGHT PICTURE, PROPER TRIGGER CONTROL AND FOLLOW THROUGH.

SATURDAY WAS AN EXCEPTIONAL DAY BECAUSE I SAW A LOT OF PEOPLE AT THE RANGE THAT HAVE TAKEN MY CLASSES AND THEY WERE PUTTING THE INFORMATION THAT THEY RECEIVED TO WORK.  A FUN AND BENEFICIAL WAY TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH OTHER PEOPLE THAT SHARE THEIR SAME INTERESTS.   THERE WAS ONE PERSON THERE THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN IN AWHILE THAT I WAS REALLY HAPPY TO SEE AND TALK TO.

FINISHED OFF THE DAY WITH A FABULOUS DINNER WITH MY LOVELY AND WONDERFUL WIFE OF 42 YEARS.  THAT WAS THE ICING ON THE CAKE!  THIS TUESDAY IS OUR 42ND ANNIVERSARY.   HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BABE!

HAPPY EASTER!

ONE OF MY FAVORITES!

Anyone who knows me or has taken any of my classes knows that the one gun I favor and believe to be the best defensive combat handgun around is the Glock Pistol.  In particular the Glock Model 19.  This is strictly my opinion and I can support my opinion with cold hard facts, but that is for another post.  So don't get your B---s all twisted up!  This post is about another outstanding defensive handgun, that being what is pictured above; the Browning High Power, caliber 9mm, ammo capacity 13+1.  Also known as the Browning P-35.  At one time the most widely used handgun in the world.  It was the first true high capacity handgun of it's time. Sometime called the Jaguar of handguns.  The ergonomics of this gun's design as well as it single action trigger contributes to the ease and comfort of being able to shoot it very accurately.  Carrying it in a Blade Tech strong side belt rig, contributes to a very comfortable concealed carry and quick access if needed.

Interesting Article....very true

What Happened to Chicago’s Murder Rate After Illinois Upheld Concealed Carry and Why it Matters
11,123Shares By Mike Miller 3 hours ago

In July of 2013, Illinois became the last state in the union to enact a concealed carry law. In January of this year, the state began accepting applications for permits. This week, Chicago police announced that the city’s first quarter murder rate was the lowest since 1958.
Via ABC-affiliate Eye Witness News in the Windy City:
§  The first three months of the year saw 6 fewer murders than the same time frame in 2013–a 9 percent drop–and 55 fewer murders than 2012, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
§  There were 90 fewer shootings and 119 fewer shooting victims, drops of 26 and 29 percent respectively, according to police statistics.
§  Compared to the first quarter of 2012, there have been 222 fewer shootings and 292 fewer shooting victims. Overall crime is down 25 percent from last year, and police said more than 1,300 illegal guns were recovered in the last three months.
Coincidence? Hard to say. And too early to tell. Although, I doubt that the anti-gun crowd is celebrating the good news.
Gun crime experts John Lott, Jr. and David Mustard made the famousargument in “Crime, Deterrence, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Firearms” that: “When state concealed handgun laws went into effect in a county, murders fell by 8.5 percent, and rapes and aggravated assaults fell by 5 and 7 percent.” More guns mean less crime.
Gary Kleck, PhD., also a gun crime expert, found that the crime deterrence effect of firearms possession is significant: sophisticaed statistics suggest three to four crimes are stopped by a handgun than are committed in the United States every year.
True, the U.S. has many more guns than other countries, but 99.995% of firearms every year are not used to commit homicides. The rate of gun homicide is in the thousands every year in a nation of over 300 million – meaning that there are numerous “killers” that far exceed gun homicides.
While statistics vary and people on both sides of the gun debate differ on whether concealed carry laws help to prevent gun crime, this thing is certain: If my loved ones or I were under attack, I would want the capability to stop the attackers. Dead in their tracks, if necessary. Wouldn’t you
