Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season. Please remember and say a little prayer for all those men and women out there that are serving in the Armed Forces in all those far away places in order for us to be safe and secure at home. STAY SAFE!

Use of Deadly Force

We are going to start a series of discussions on some of the more important topics of gun craft. Hopefully, we will be able to give you a more comprehensive and better understanding of what you need to do during a critical incident, in order to neutralize your target. As you are aware, or maybe not, most gun fights happen within a distance of approximately 3 to 7 feet, this is generally called the conversational distance, or your vulnerable zone, or whatever. The important thing to realize is that if it is going to happen, this is where it is going to, MOST LIKELY, take place. The number of shots fired are in the neighborhood of around 3 to 5 rounds and this happens in a very short amount of time, 2,3, or 4 seconds, with the latter being the more unlikely. Your whole world will slow down, it will seem that you are moving in slow motion, and you probably will not have any recall as to how many shots you fired. Statistics show that usually the person that gets the first critical hit is usually the one that wins. Remember it's not the first one who fires. You could be the first one that breaks the shot, but unless you hit something good, Thoracic Area, Central Nervous System, or Lateral Pelvis, it don't count.

Handgun rounds are probably not the best source for being able to stop someone, RIGHT NOW, that is trying to cause you serious bodily harm or death. They do not instantaneously cause a person to stop what their doing. That is why we instruct our students to fire multiple shots. The consciences of opinion of most experienced instructors is, "What do most people do after their shot with a handgun, Answer, the same thing that they were doing before they were shot". Now, can one round cause a person to stop immediately, of course, but it must hit them in an area like the T.A. or C.N.S. There are too many variables to take into consideration when your involved in a life threatening situation, so you must error on the side of caution. That being said, you need to shoot until the threat is over. Meaning that you have to destroyed that person's will to fight.

We will cover some additional areas in regards to the different variables a little later. But, right now you must remember this; YOU DO NOT SHOOT TO KILL! YOU ONLY SHOOT TO STOP THE THREAT! YOU SHOOT MULTIPLE TIMES 2,3, OR HOWEVER MANY IT TAKES TO STOP THAT PERSONS ABILITY TO SERIOULY HURT OR KILL YOU!

Let's be honest, with ourselves. No one wants to take another humans life. But, there are bad people out there that don't feel that way. They fall into that 1% of the world population. They are the wolves of the world. They will stop at nothing to get what they want, and that includes killing you or anyone else that tries to stop them. If you have to shoot someone that falls into that category, a wolf, and that person dies because of you having to shoot them, OH WELL, THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE PUT THEMSELVES IN THAT POSITION.

There are 4 major components that would have to be immediately present in order for you to be justified in using Deadly Force to protect your life or that of another. They are; the perp has to have the Ability, Opportunity, Jeopardy, and Preclusion has to exits. Let's now look at each one a little closer;

1. Ability, does the person have a weapon or means that could cause you serious bodily harm or death, i.e., knife, gun, baseball bat, or because of their size difference or their training.

2. Opportunity, is that person in a position to effectively use that particular weapon to seriously hurt or kill you i.e., conversation distance 3-5', 10, 15, yards or further. This is a crucial element. Say for example the individual is standing across the street from where you are and waving a knife or bat. He's yelling that he is going to kill you! Now he has the ability but not the opportunity to put you in imminent danger right then and there. If that same person was standing 7' away from you and his intentions were the same and he advanced toward you, now he would have the opportunity. If that same person was standing 15 yards away with a firearm in his hand, an pointed at you, stating that he was going to kill you. You think the opportunity exists, you better. A firearm gives you the means to deliver deadly force at a distance.

3. Jeopardy, basically means that anyone that was witnessing this situation would agree that this individual had the intent and the means to cause you serious bodily harm or death right then and there if you did not act in order to protect yourself.

4. Preclusion, simply stated, means that you have exhausted all possible means available in order to protect yourself and that Deadly Force was the only action that would prevent your demise.

Next we will cover the Components of Acceptability

John Farnam, world renown trainer

"Train the way fight!" It's important to remember that during a critical incident, you will act and do what you have previously done in training. Just like when you were a youngster and you went to baseball practice. The practice was to perfect your skills so that when you were in a real game you would perform without error.

Point of View

I was going thru some of my old files and happened across this editorial which I felt deserving enough to post. Especially with the current trend of scum bags out there that think that they can assault and kill police officers. They better realize that they are the ones that put themselves in a spot "where bad things are going to happen". And, the public needs to realize that the police officers out there are face with a very dangerous task and need to make split second decisions that should not be questioned, especially when our less desirable citizens make attempts to subject law enforcement officers and law biding people to serious bodily harm or death. Hats off to you Mr. Lamb for hitting the nail right on the head.

My Thoughts & Opinion!

Get ready for what is going to be the most terrifying ride of your life, in the next four years. I just hope the people of this country are ready to accept what they asked for. There are those of us that know what we are going to have to do to get through this massive grip that the majority of the voting, American Public has put on us. You are about to witness a government that is going to be totally out of control and not be accountable for anything they do. I am very saddened, but most of all, totally disappointed by the outcome of this election. What I mean by disappointed is that Senator McCain seemed to appear as if he just didn't get. That's what cost him the election. Governor Palin, is the type of person that we need in Washington, but she needs to have her edges more finely polished. Hopefully some day we will get back to having more of the Gov. Palin's type of individuals to call upon to represent us. I say this because most Americans today can't see a person for what they are really worth, they see only what they want to see and what the person appears to be. Anybody can put a costume on, but it's what is in that costume that counts. I did not vote for the man I thought could lead this country better, but against the man who I believe will try and destroy what has made this country GREAT! Our Constitution was founded by some of the most intelligent men of their time. It was set up to protect " The People" against those that would try to take away the rights and freedoms that they fought so hard to obtain. Even though 62 million people voted for Obama, remember that 68 million didn't! They said that 130 million people voted, and McCain recieved 55 million votes. That left a difference of 13 million votes. I feel very stongly, that if McCain would have stayed on track with the concerns of the American People, he could have pull the majority of those 13 million votes over and won this election. It is my strong belief that of those 62 million votes a lot were only based on one thing, the wrong thing, COLOR. We need to never forget that we are all Americans First, no matter what our background is. STAY SAFE! & GOD BLESS AMERICA!
If you think that I'm mistaken regarding my opinion about the color vote, check out U Tube, Howard Stern, The Harlem Interviews.

Maybe a little REDICULOUS, MAYBE NOT!

The 7 Year Anniversary of 911

I hope we did not forget what happened to our country 7 years ago on this day. As I walked along the streets of center city Phila. today, on my way to work, I could not help notice just how unaware people were walking through the streets. Talking on their cell phones, listening to music on their mp3 players, completely oblivious to what was going on around them. Just like sheep out in the field grazing. Most of them do not even realize that they are able to live their lives this way because of the SHEEPDOGS that are out there making sure that they are safe and out of harms way. Let us not forget those individuals who we lost 7 years ago. Please say a prayer for them and their families. And don't forget to support our SHEEPDOGS, OUR TROOPS, POLICE, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, AND OUR FIRE FIGHTERS.

"4" Cardinal Rules of Gun Safety

1. All Guns are always loaded!

2. Never point a Gun at anything you do not want to Destroy!

3. Keep your Finger out of the Trigger Guard and OFF of the Trigger until you are on target
and you have made the definitive decision to SHOOT!

4. Always be aware of your Target and what is Beyond your Target!

Effects of Gun Control

Subject: gun control

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ------------------------------
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. --------------------------- Germany established gun control in 1938. From 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. ------------------------------
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, una ble to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ---- ------------------------ Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ------------------------------
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Ch ristians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. ------------------------------
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. -----------------------------
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million. ------------------------------
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program co sting Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the State of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns! It will never happen here!!! I bet the Aussies said that too!
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.
You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians diss eminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind him of this history lesson.
With Guns...........We Are 'Citizens'.
Without Them........We Are 'Subjects'.
During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!
Note: Admiral Yamamoto who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor had attended Harvard University 1919-1921 and was Naval Attach to the U. S. 1925-28. Most of our Navy was destroyed at Pearl Harbor, and the U. S. Army had been deprived of funding by Congress. Because of this, our Army was ill prepared to defend the country.
It was reported that when asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor attack with an invasion of the U. S. Mainland, his reply was that he had lived in the U. S. and he knew that almost all American households had guns.
If you value your freedom, Please spread this anti-gun control message to all your friends.

WE HAVE ALL HEARD THE SAYING "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT". DO YOU AGREE? I DON'T! HOW ABOUT THIS MAKING MORE SENSE, "PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT". IF YOUR PRACTICING AND YOUR TECHNIQUES ARE INCORRECT YOU COULD BE REINFORCING POTENTIALLY BAD AND DANGEROUS TECHNIQUES AND HABITS. MAKE SURE THAT WHAT YOU ARE DOING DURING YOUR PRACTICE SESSIONS ARE REALISTIC AND TACTICALLY CORRECT!

The three "R's" of Training

Today just going out and shooting your state's mandatory A.G.'s course of fire does not cut it. The courts and our communities expect us to perform at a much higher standard. This means that we must train and train our people to the highest level of reality. Sometime this is a bit harder than it should be, because of funds and the time it takes. But, anyone that carries a gun for work related issues can come up with a training regime that is suitable and relevant to their job and reason that they are carrying a gun. This pertains to law enforcement and, security officer's, as well as executive protection, armored car personnel or any type of protection detail and of course to any civilian. with a CCW PERMIT, that carries for self defense. If you carry a gun it is imperative that you become proficient with it. This means that you need to be able to hit your intended threat consistently at distances from 0' to 45'. And you need to be able to do this with hits to the center line of the body which will hopefully stop their aggressive actions in the shortest possible time. Generally, 3 shots center mass should accomplish this but don't count on it, be prepared to continue to shoot until the threat has stopped. As good as the handgun rounds have become we should all be aware that they are not all that effective at immediately shutting down an aggressive individual's behavior, especially if their on some type of drug. If you need to stop that aggression immediately you need a shotgun or a rifle. Most professionals will agree when asked the question, "What does a person do after their shot with a handgun round?" Their answer is usually the same. "The same thing that they were doing before they were shot". REMEMBER! you only shoot in self defense and your only objective is to stop the potential threat. Then scan for possible additional threats and be prepared to deal with them. IMPORTANT! Don't be in a hurry to re-holster the gun, MAKE SURE THE FIGHT IS OVER! You only need to be quick on your presentation, (getting it out of the leather).

When you train or when you are training others remember the THREE "R's".

The training to be effective must be, REALISTIC, Standing and shooting at static paper targets is not realistic training. you need to incorporate drills & scenarios in which you have to shoot and move, shoot at moving targets, shoot at multiple threats, shoot from different positions, shoot strong hand & support hand only, and of course utilization cover. the training must be RELEVANT to what your job is, and the training has to be RECENT. The training should always be challenging & updated to reflect the latest and most effective techniques.

Formula for Prevailing in a Critical Incident

PREVAIL = Coming out of the critical incident Mentally & Physically, in the same CONDITION
you went into it.
SURVIVING = You may still be alive but you may be in a wheel chair the rest of your life.
LOSING = Well we all know what that means!

Tools you need to PREVAIL:
1. TACTICS.............DO YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE PLAN IN YOUR BAG OF TRICKS, IE; PROPER USE OF COVER, SHOOT & MOVE
2. MINDSET...........AWARENESS & WILLINGNESS TO DO WHATEVER NEEDS TO BE
DONE TO PREVAIL.
3. SKILLS................DO YOU OWN EVERYTHING WITHIN 15 YARDS?........ UNDER STRESS!
4. EQUIPMENT.....IS YOUR GEAR SUITABLE FOR THE JOB AT HAND?
